Gardeners Grange Park Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Grange Park is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across all projects and service locations.
We aim to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property through careful planning, risk assessment, training and ongoing review of our working practices. Health and safety is an integral part of how we deliver high quality gardening services.
Scope and Responsibilities
This policy applies to all staff, whether permanent, temporary or contracted, who carry out gardening, landscaping, grounds maintenance or related administrative work on behalf of Gardeners Grange Park. It also applies, where relevant, to visitors, clients and other third parties who may be on or near our work sites.
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who will provide appropriate resources, guidance and supervision to ensure safe systems of work. Managers and supervisors are responsible for implementing this policy, communicating procedures and ensuring that activities are carried out safely and in accordance with relevant regulations and codes of practice.
Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. All staff must follow safety instructions, use the protective equipment provided, report hazards and near misses, and cooperate fully in any investigation or improvement measures.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Gardeners Grange Park will identify and assess the risks arising from our gardening and grounds maintenance work. This includes, but is not limited to, risks associated with manual handling, powered machinery, hand tools, working at height, the use of chemicals, traffic movement, uneven ground, water features and environmental conditions such as heat, cold and poor visibility.
Risk assessments will be carried out before starting new work activities or when there are significant changes to existing tasks, equipment or locations. The findings will be used to put in place safe systems of work, including clear instructions, suitable equipment, protective measures and emergency procedures.
Employees will be briefed on relevant risks and controls before beginning work on site. They are required to follow the safe systems of work developed for each task and must not undertake any activity for which they have not been trained or authorised.
Training, Competence and Supervision
Gardeners Grange Park will provide appropriate health and safety training to ensure that all staff are competent to carry out their duties safely. This may include induction training, equipment-specific instruction, manual handling techniques, safe use of horticultural chemicals and awareness of site-specific hazards.
Where specialist equipment or higher risk activities are involved, staff will only be allowed to operate after they have received adequate training and, where required, hold the relevant certification. Refresher training will be provided periodically or when there are changes in equipment, methods or legislation.
Supervisors will monitor working practices on site to confirm that procedures are being followed correctly. Any unsafe behaviour or conditions will be addressed promptly, and additional guidance or training will be given where needed.
Tools, Machinery and Personal Protective Equipment
All tools and machinery used by Gardeners Grange Park will be suitable for the tasks undertaken and maintained in safe working order. Equipment will be inspected regularly, and defects will be reported immediately so that unsafe items can be taken out of service until repaired or replaced.
Personal protective equipment will be provided where required by the risk assessment. This may include safety footwear, gloves, high visibility clothing, eye and ear protection, respiratory protection and protective clothing for the handling of chemicals. Employees must use the protective equipment supplied and take care of it in accordance with the instructions given.
Chemical and Environmental Safety
Where gardening work involves the use of chemicals such as fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides, Gardeners Grange Park will ensure that only approved products are used and that they are stored, handled and applied in accordance with manufacturer guidance and relevant safety requirements.
Staff involved in chemical use will receive specific training and will be provided with appropriate personal protective equipment. Care will be taken to minimise any risk to people, animals, plants and watercourses. Records of chemical use and safety data will be maintained as required.
We are committed to environmentally responsible gardening practices. Wherever possible we use methods that reduce risk to health and the environment, such as integrated pest management, careful waste segregation and the responsible use of fuels and oils.
Public Protection and Site Safety
Many of our gardening activities take place in areas accessible to the public, such as private gardens, communal spaces and shared access routes. Gardeners Grange Park will take steps to safeguard anyone who may be affected by our work.
Where necessary we will use barriers, signs or temporary controls to restrict access to working areas while machinery is in use or while surfaces are slippery or otherwise hazardous. Vehicles and equipment will be parked and operated so as to minimise risk to pedestrians and other road users.
We will maintain good housekeeping on site by keeping work areas tidy, promptly removing waste materials and securing tools and machinery when not in use.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses and hazardous occurrences must be reported as soon as possible to a manager or supervisor. Gardeners Grange Park will investigate incidents to identify underlying causes and put in place measures to prevent recurrence.
First aid arrangements will be made for each work site, including access to a suitable first aid kit and information on how to obtain further medical assistance. Staff will be made aware of the procedures for dealing with emergencies such as fire, serious injury, chemical spills or sudden changes in weather conditions.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Grange Park will regularly monitor health and safety performance through site inspections, review of incident reports, staff feedback and periodic audits of our systems and procedures. Where improvements are identified, we will implement changes promptly.
This health and safety policy will be reviewed periodically, and whenever there are significant changes in our activities, working methods or relevant legal requirements. Updates will be communicated to all employees and, where appropriate, to clients and other interested parties.
By working together and following this policy, Gardeners Grange Park aims to provide safe, reliable and professional gardening services while protecting the wellbeing of everyone involved in or affected by our work.
